About hearing loss
Music-induced hearing loss occurs when you expose your ears to a lot of noise for too long. Sound levels are measured in decibels (dB). On this page, we’ll explain what hearing damage is and how you can prevent it.
What exactly is noise-induced hearing loss?
Noise-induced hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. It is caused by sounds that are too loud, for a long or even short period of time. Tiny hair-like structures that sit on top of hair cells in the inner ear (stereocilia) are damaged by noises that are too loud and/or last for too long. When the stereocilia are damaged, the hair cells can’t send information about the sound to the brain anymore. This can lead to a morning-after beep. In most cases, this hearing loss is temporary but when loud sound levels are ignored, hearing loss can get worse over a lifetime, possibly resulting in deafness.
How loud is too loud?
At 100 dB you can be at direct risk of permanent hearing loss. At live music venues, in clubs, and festivals the volume is often higher than 100 dB. This can have terrible consequences for your hearing, such as a ringing or whistling noise in your ear or even deafness. Several case studies show that about 10% in Britain, 10% in the Netherlands, 18% in Germany and 15% in the USA, have reported some form of hearing loss caused by loud noise.
